New Perspectives on Glacial Geomorphology in Earth’s Deep Time Record

چکیده
The deep time (pre-Quaternary) glacial record is an important means to understand the growth, development, and recession of global cryosphere on very long timescales (10 6 –10 8 Myr). Sedimentological description interpretation outcrops has traditionally played role. Whilst such data remain vital, new insights are now possible thanks freely accessible aerial satellite imagery, widespread availability affordability Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles, accessibility 3D rendering software. In this paper, we showcase examples glaciated landscapes from Cryogenian, Ediacaran, Late Ordovician Carboniferous where approach revolutionizing our understanding glaciation. Although some problems cannot be overcome (erosion or dissolution evidence), robust interpretations in terms evolving subglacial environment can made. Citing Australia (Cryogenian), China (Ediacaran), North South Africa (Late Ordovician, Carboniferous), Namibia illustrate how power geomorphology harnessed interpret Earth’s ancient record.

New perspectives on Beringian Quaternary paleogeography, stratigraphy, and glacial history
Aspects of the paleogeography, stratigraphy, and glacial history of Beringia have been greatly revised over the past 15}20 yr. Access to North East Russia, in particular, has provided the opportunity to evaluate the Beringia landscape as a contiguous subcontinent during the Quaternary. For the "rst time, new research has made clearer the connection between tectonic forces and the submergence of...
متن کاملEarths: Rare in Time, Not Space?
We compare two recent astrobiological approaches to the solution of the problem of the “Great Silence” (or Fermi’s paradox): the “rare Earth” hypothesis of Ward and Brownlee, and the phase-transition scenario of Annis. We show that they have important similarities, as far as self-selection of intelligent observers is concerned. In order to better illuminate the differences, we consider the dura...
متن کاملThe glacial geomorphology of upper Godthåbsfjord (Nuup Kangerlua) in southwest Greenland
The Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) is known to have experienced widespread retreat over the last century. Information on outlet glacier dynamics, prior to this, are limited due to both a lack of observations and a paucity of mapped or mappable deglacial evidence which restricts our understanding of centennial to millennial timescale dynamics of the GrIS. Here we present glacial geomorphological map...
متن کاملNew perspectives in benthic deep-sea microbial ecology
Deep-sea ecosystems represent the largest and most remote biome of the biosphere. They play a fundamental role in global biogeochemical cycles and their functions allow existence of life on our planet. In the last 20 years enormous progress has been made in the investigation of deep-sea microbes, but the knowledge of the microbial ecology of the soft bottoms (representing >90% of the deep-sea f...
